John 10:38

John 12:38-40

Context
12:38 so that the word 9  of Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled. He said, 10 Lord, who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of the Lord 11  been revealed? 12  12:39 For this reason they could not believe, 13  because again Isaiah said,

12:40He has blinded their eyes

and hardened their heart, 14

so that they would not see with their eyes

and understand with their heart, 15

and turn to me, 16  and I would heal them. 17

Matthew 11:4-5

11:4 Jesus answered them, 18  “Go tell John what you hear and see: 19  11:5 The blind see, the 20  lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news proclaimed to them.

Luke 7:21-23

Acts 2:22

Context

2:22 “Men of Israel, 31  listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man clearly attested to you by God with powerful deeds, 32  wonders, and miraculous signs 33  that God performed among you through him, just as you yourselves know –

[5:36]  1 tn Or “works.”

[5:36]  2 tn Grk “complete, which I am now doing”; the referent of the relative pronoun has been specified by repeating “deeds” from the previous clause.

[10:25]  3 tn Grk “answered them.”

[10:25]  4 tn Or “the works.”

[10:32]  5 tn Grk “Jesus answered them.”

[10:32]  6 tn Or “good works.”

[10:38]  7 tn Or “works.”

[10:38]  8 tn Or “so that you may learn.”

[12:38]  9 tn Or “message.”

[12:38]  10 tn Grk “who said.”

[12:38]  11 tn “The arm of the Lord” is an idiom for “God’s great power” (as exemplified through Jesus’ miraculous signs). This response of unbelief is interpreted by the author as a fulfillment of the prophetic words of Isaiah (Isa 53:1). The phrase ὁ βραχίων κυρίου (Jo braciwn kuriou) is a figurative reference to God’s activity and power which has been revealed in the sign-miracles which Jesus has performed (compare the previous verse).

[12:38]  12 sn A quotation from Isa 53:1.

[12:39]  13 sn The author explicitly states here that Jesus’ Jewish opponents could not believe, and quotes Isa 6:10 to show that God had in fact blinded their eyes and hardened their heart. This OT passage was used elsewhere in the NT to explain Jewish unbelief: Paul’s final words in Acts (28:26-27) are a quotation of this same passage, which he uses to explain why the Jewish people have not accepted the gospel he has preached. A similar passage (Isa 29:10) is quoted in a similar context in Rom 11:8.

[12:40]  14 tn Or “closed their mind.”

[12:40]  15 tn Or “their mind.”

[12:40]  16 tn One could also translate στραφῶσιν (strafwsin) as “repent” or “change their ways,” but both of these terms would be subject to misinterpretation by the modern English reader. The idea is one of turning back to God, however. The words “to me” are not in the Greek text, but are implied.

[12:40]  17 sn A quotation from Isa 6:10.

[11:4]  18 tn Grk “And answering, Jesus said to them.” This construction is somewhat redundant in English and has been simplified in the translation.

[11:4]  19 sn What you hear and see. The following activities all paraphrase various OT descriptions of the time of promised salvation: Isa 35:5-6; 26:19; 29:18-19; 61:1. Jesus is answering not by acknowledging a title, but by pointing to the nature of his works, thus indicating the nature of the time.

[11:5]  20 tn Grk “and the,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more. Two other conjunctions are omitted in this series.

[7:21]  21 tn Grk “In that hour.”

[7:21]  22 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[7:21]  23 tn Grk “and sicknesses,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.

[7:21]  24 tn Or “and bestowed (sight) on.”

[7:22]  25 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the relationship to Jesus’ miraculous cures in the preceding sentence.

[7:22]  26 tn Grk “answering, he said to them.” This is redundant in English and has been simplified in the translation to “he answered them.”

[7:22]  27 sn The same verb has been translated “inform” in 7:18.

[7:22]  28 sn What you have seen and heard. The following activities all paraphrase various OT descriptions of the time of promised salvation: Isa 35:5-6; 26:19; 29:18-19; 61:1. Jesus is answering not by acknowledging a title, but by pointing to the nature of his works, thus indicating the nature of the time.

[7:22]  29 tn Grk “and the,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.

[7:23]  30 tn Grk “whoever.”

[2:22]  31 tn Or “Israelite men,” although this is less natural English. The Greek term here is ἀνήρ (anhr), which only exceptionally is used in a generic sense of both males and females. In this context, it is conceivable that this is a generic usage, although it can also be argued that Peter’s remarks were addressed primarily to the men present, even if women were there.

[2:22]  32 tn Or “miraculous deeds.”

[2:22]  33 tn Again, the context indicates the miraculous nature of these signs, and this is specified in the translation.

[2:4]  34 tn Grk “God bearing witness together” (the phrase “with them” is implied).

[2:4]  35 tn Grk “and distributions of the Holy Spirit.”
