7:39 (Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive, for the Spirit had not yet been given, 1  because Jesus was not yet glorified.) 2

6:4 For it is impossible in the case of those who have once been enlightened, tasted the heavenly gift, become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 6:5 tasted the good word of God and the miracles of the coming age, 6:6 and then have committed apostasy, 3  to renew them again to repentance, since 4  they are crucifying the Son of God for themselves all over again 5  and holding him up to contempt.

Hebrews 10:26-29

10:26 For if we deliberately keep on sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, no further sacrifice for sins is left for us, 6  10:27 but only a certain fearful expectation of judgment and a fury 7  of fire that will consume God’s enemies. 8  10:28 Someone who rejected the law of Moses was put to death 9  without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 10  10:29 How much greater punishment do you think that person deserves who has contempt for 11  the Son of God, and profanes 12  the blood of the covenant that made him holy, 13  and insults the Spirit of grace?

[7:39]  1 tn Grk “for the Spirit was not yet.” Although only B and a handful of other NT mss supply the participle δεδομένον (dedomenon), this is followed in the translation to avoid misunderstanding by the modern English reader that prior to this time the Spirit did not exist. John’s phrase is expressed from a human standpoint and has nothing to do with the preexistence of the third Person of the Godhead. The meaning is that the era of the Holy Spirit had not yet arrived; the Spirit was not as yet at work in a way he later would be because Jesus had not yet returned to his Father. Cf. also Acts 19:2.

[6:6]  4 tn Or “while”; Grk “crucifying…and holding.” The Greek participles here (“crucifying…and holding”) can be understood as either causal (“since”) or temporal (“while”).
