John 8:10

8:10 Jesus stood up straight ¹  and said to her, “Woman, ²  where are they? Did no one condemn you?”

John 11:8

11:8 The disciples replied, ³  “Rabbi, the Jewish leaders ⁴  were just now trying ⁵  to stone you to death! Are ⁶  you going there again?”

17:4 I glorified you on earth by completing ⁷  the work you gave me to do. ⁸

[8:10]  ² sn Woman was a polite form of address (see BDAG 208-9 s.v. γυνή 1), similar to “Madam” or “Ma’am” used in English in different regions.

[11:8]  ³ tn Grk “The disciples said to him.”

[11:8]  ⁴ tn Or “the Jewish authorities”; Grk “the Jews.” In NT usage the term ᾿Ιουδαῖοι (Ioudaioi) may refer to the entire Jewish people, the residents of Jerusalem and surrounding territory, the authorities in Jerusalem, or merely those who were hostile to Jesus. (For further information see R. G. Bratcher, “‘The Jews’ in the Gospel of John,” BT 26 [1975]: 401-9.) Here the phrase refers to the Jewish leaders. See the previous references and the notes on the phrase “Jewish people” in v. 19, and “Jewish religious leaders” in vv. 24, 31, 33.

[11:8]  ⁵ tn Grk “seeking.”

[11:8]  ⁶ tn Grk “And are.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.

[17:4]  ⁵ tn Or “by finishing” or “by accomplishing.” Jesus now states that he has glorified the Father on earth by finishing (τελειώσας [teleiwsas] is best understood as an adverbial participle of means) the work which the Father had given him to do.

[17:4]  ⁶ tn Grk “the work that you gave to me so that I may do it.”
