Joshua 10:10

10:10 The Lord routed ¹  them before Israel. Israel ²  thoroughly defeated them ³  at Gibeon. They chased them up the road to the pass ⁴  of Beth Horon and struck them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah.

Joshua 10:20

10:20 Joshua and the Israelites almost totally wiped them out, but some survivors did escape to the fortified cities. ⁵ 

Joshua 20:3

20:3 Anyone who accidentally kills someone can escape there; ⁶  these cities will be a place of asylum from the avenger of blood.

Joshua 20:9

20:9 These were the cities of refuge ⁷  appointed for all the Israelites and for resident foreigners living among them. Anyone who accidentally killed someone could escape there and not be executed by ⁸  the avenger of blood, at least until his case was reviewed by the assembly. ⁹ 

[10:10]  ¹ tn Or “caused to panic.”

[10:10]  ² tn Heb “he.” The referent is probably Israel (mentioned at the end of the previous sentence in the verse; cf. NIV, NRSV), but it is also possible that the Lord should be understood as the referent (cf. NASB “and He slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon”), or even Joshua (cf. NEB “and Joshua defeated them utterly in Gibeon”).

[10:10]  ³ tn Heb “struck them down with a great striking down.”

[10:10]  ⁴ tn Or “ascent.”

[10:20]  ⁵ tn Heb “When Joshua and the sons of Israel finished defeating them with a very great defeat until they were destroyed (now the survivors escaped to the fortified cities).” In the Hebrew text the initial temporal clause (“when Joshua…finished”) is subordinated to v. 21 (“the whole army returned”).

[20:3]  ⁹ tn Heb “so that the one who kills, taking life accidentally without knowledge, may flee there.”

[20:9]  ¹³ tn The Hebrew text reads simply “the cities.” The words “for refuge” are supplied for clarification.
