Joshua 10:42

Context
10:42 Joshua captured in one campaign 1  all these kings and their lands, for the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.

Joshua 11:18-23

Context
11:18 Joshua campaigned against 2  these kings for quite some time. 3  11:19 No city made peace with the Israelites (except the Hivites living in Gibeon); 4  they had to conquer all of them, 5  11:20 for the Lord determined to make them obstinate so they would attack Israel. He wanted Israel to annihilate them without mercy, as he had instructed Moses. 6

11:21 At that time Joshua attacked and eliminated the Anakites from the hill country 7  – from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and all the hill country of Judah and Israel. 8  Joshua annihilated them and their cities. 11:22 No Anakites were left in Israelite territory, though some remained in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod. 11:23 Joshua conquered 9  the whole land, just as the Lord had promised Moses, 10  and he assigned Israel their tribal portions. 11  Then the land was free of war.

Nehemiah 9:22-24

Context

9:22 “You gave them kingdoms and peoples, and you allocated them to every corner of the land. 12  They inherited the land of King Sihon of Heshbon 13  and the land of King Og of Bashan. 9:23 You multiplied their descendants like the stars of the sky. You brought them to the land you had told their ancestors to enter in order to possess. 9:24 Their descendants 14  entered and possessed the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites who were the inhabitants of the land. You delivered them into their hand, together with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with as they pleased.

[10:42]  1 tn Heb “at one time.”

[11:18]  2 tn Heb “made war with.”

[11:18]  3 tn Heb “for many days.”

[11:19]  4 tn The LXX omits this parenthetical note, which may represent a later scribal addition.

[11:19]  5 tn Heb “the whole they took in battle.”

[11:20]  6 tn Heb “for from the Lord it was to harden their heart[s] to meet for the battle with Israel, in order to annihilate them, so that they would receive no mercy, in order annihilate them, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

[11:21]  7 tn Heb “went and cut off the Anakites from the hill country.”

[11:21]  8 tn Heb “and from all the hill country of Israel.”

[11:23]  9 tn Heb “took.”

[11:23]  10 tn Heb “according to all which the Lord said to Moses.” The translation assumes this refers to the promise of the land (see 1:3). Another possibility is that it refers to the Lord’s instructions, in which case the phrase could be translated, “just as the Lord had instructed Moses” (so NLT; cf. also NIV “had directed Moses”).

[11:23]  11 tn Heb “and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their allotted portions by their tribes.”

[9:22]  12 tn The words “of the land” are not in the Hebrew text, but are supplied in the translation for clarity.

[9:22]  13 tc Most Hebrew MSS read “the land of Sihon and the land of the king of Heshbon.” The present translation (along with NAB, NASB, NIV, NCV, NRSV, CEV, NLT) follows the reading of one Hebrew MS, the LXX, and the Vulgate.

[9:24]  14 tn Heb “the sons.”

[135:9]  15 tn Or “signs” (see Ps 65:8).

[135:9]  16 tn Or “portents”; “omens” (see Ps 71:7). The Egyptian plagues are alluded to here.
