Joshua 13:1

Context
The Lord Speaks to Joshua

13:1 When Joshua was very old, 1  the Lord told him, “You are very old, and a great deal of land remains to be conquered.

Joshua 13:12-13

Context
13:12 the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan, who ruled in Ashtaroth and Edrei. (He was one of the few remaining Rephaites.) 2  Moses defeated them and took their lands. 3  13:13 But the Israelites did not conquer 4  the Geshurites and Maacathites; Geshur and Maacah live among Israel to this very day.

Joshua 15:14

15:14 Caleb drove out 5  from there three Anakites – Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, descendants of Anak.

16:10 The Ephraimites 6  did not conquer the Canaanites living in Gezer. The Canaanites live among the Ephraimites to this very day and do hard labor as their servants.

[13:1]  1 tn Heb “was old, coming into the days.” This expression, referring to advancing in years, also occurs in the following clause.

[13:12]  2 tn Heb “from the remnant of the Rephaites.”

[13:12]  3 tn Or “dispossessed them.”

[13:13]  3 tn Or “dispossess.”

[15:14]  4 tn Or “dispossessed.”

[16:10]  5 tn Heb “they”; the referent (the Ephraimites) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[17:12]  6 tn Heb “sons”; “men” has been used in the translation because the context involves the conquest of cities; therefore, warriors (hence males) would be in view here.

[17:12]  7 tn Or “were determined.”

[21:43]  7 tn Heb “which he had sworn to give to their fathers.”

[21:43]  8 tn Or “possessed.”

[23:9]  8 tn Heb “not a man has stood before you.”

[24:4]  9 tn Heb “I gave to Esau Mount Seir to possess it.”
