Joshua 5:6

Context
5:6 Indeed, for forty years the Israelites traveled through the desert until all the men old enough to fight when they left Egypt, the ones who had disobeyed the Lord, died off. 1  For the Lord had sworn a solemn oath to them that he would not let them see the land he had sworn on oath to give them, 2  a land rich in 3  milk and honey.

Joshua 8:33

Context
8:33 All the people, 4  rulers, 5  leaders, and judges were standing on either side of the ark, in front of the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord. Both resident foreigners and native Israelites were there. 6  Half the people stood in front of Mount Gerizim and the other half in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the Lord’s servant had previously instructed to them to do for the formal blessing ceremony. 7

Joshua 10:24

Context
10:24 When they brought the kings out to Joshua, he 8  summoned all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the troops who accompanied him, “Come here 9  and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So they came up 10  and put their feet on their necks.

[5:6]  1 tn Heb “all the nation, the men of war who went out from Egypt, who did not listen to the voice of the Lord, came to an end.”

[5:6]  2 tn Some Hebrew mss, as well as the Syriac version, support this reading. Most ancient witnesses read “us.”

[5:6]  3 tn Heb “flowing with.”

[8:33]  4 tn Heb “All Israel.”

[8:33]  5 tn Or “elders.”

[8:33]  6 tn Heb “like the resident alien, like the citizen.” The language is idiomatic, meaning that both groups were treated the same, at least in this instance.

[8:33]  7 tn Heb “as Moses, the Lord’s servant, commanded to bless the people, Israel, formerly.”

[10:24]  7 tn Heb “Joshua.” The translation has replaced the proper name with the pronoun (“he”) because a repetition of the proper name here would be redundant according to English style.

[10:24]  8 tn Or “Draw near.”

[10:24]  9 tn Or “drew near.”
