The Gibeonites Deceive Israel

9:1 When the news reached all the kings on the west side of the Jordan ¹  – in the hill country, the lowlands, ²  and all along the Mediterranean coast ³  as far as ⁴  Lebanon (including the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites) –

20:6 He must remain ⁵  in that city until his case is decided by the assembly ⁶  and the high priest dies. ⁷  Then the one who committed manslaughter may return home to the city from which he escaped.” ⁸ 

Joshua 23:4

23:4 See, I have parceled out to your tribes these remaining nations, ⁹  from the Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea ¹⁰  in the west, including all the nations I defeated. ¹¹

[9:1]  ² tn Or “foothills”; Heb “the Shephelah.”

[9:1]  ³ tn Heb “all the coast of the Great Sea.” The “Great Sea” was the typical designation for the Mediterranean Sea.

[9:1]  ⁴ tn Heb “in front of.”

[20:6]  ⁵ tn Or “live.”

[20:6]  ⁶ tn Heb “until he stands before the assembly for judgment.”

[20:6]  ⁷ tn Heb “until the death of the high priest who is in those days.”

[20:6]  ⁸ tn Heb “may return and enter his city and his house, the city from which he escaped.”

[23:4]  ⁹ tn Heb “I have assigned by lots to you these remaining nations as an inheritance for your tribes.”

[23:4]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “the Great Sea,” the typical designation for the Mediterranean Sea.

[23:4]  ¹¹ tn Heb “from the Jordan and all the nations which I cut off and the Great Sea [at] the place where the sun sets.” The relationship of the second half of the verse, which mentions nations already conquered, to the first half, which speaks of “remaining nations,” is difficult to understand.
