9:6 They came to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land. Make a treaty with us.”

Joshua 9:9

9:9 They told him, “Your subjects ¹  have come from a very distant land because of the reputation ²  of the Lord your God, for we have heard the news about all he did in Egypt ³

9:16 Three days after they made the treaty with them, the Israelites found out they were from the local area and lived nearby. ⁴

13:1 When Joshua was very old, ⁵  the Lord told him, “You are very old, and a great deal of land remains to be conquered.

5:13 When Joshua was near ⁹  Jericho, ¹⁰  he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him holding a drawn sword. ¹¹  Joshua approached him and asked him, “Are you on our side or allied with our enemies?” ¹²

7:3 They returned and reported to Joshua, ¹³  “Don’t send the whole army. ¹⁴  About two or three thousand men are adequate to defeat Ai. ¹⁵  Don’t tire out the whole army, for Ai is small.” ¹⁶

10:23 They did as ordered; ¹⁷  they brought the five kings ¹⁸  out of the cave to him – the kings of Jerusalem, ¹⁹  Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon.

And look, a man was standing in front of him, and his sword was drawn in his hand.” The verb הִנֵּה (hinneh, “look”) invites the reader to view the scene through Joshua’s eyes. By calling the stranger “a man,” the author reflects Joshua’s perspective. The text shortly reveals his true identity (vv. 14-15).
