[20:2]  1 tn Heb “or from the sojourner who sojourns”; NAB “an alien residing in Israel.”

[20:2]  2 tn Heb “his seed” (so KJV, ASV); likewise in vv. 3-4.

[20:2]  3 tn Regarding Molech and Molech worship see the note on Lev 18:21.

[20:2]  4 tn This is not the most frequently-used Hebrew verb for stoning (see instead סָקַל, saqal), but a word that refers to the action of throwing, slinging, or pelting someone with stones (רָגָם, ragam; see HALOT 1187 s.v. רגם qal.a, and B. A. Levine, Leviticus [JPSTC], 136).

[24:14]  5 tn The words “to death” are supplied in the translation as a clarification; they are clearly implied from v. 16.

[13:10]  6 sn Execution by means of pelting the offender with stones afforded a mechanism whereby the whole community could share in it. In a very real sense it could be done not only in the name of the community and on its behalf but by its members (cf. Lev 24:14; Num 15:35; Deut 21:21; Josh 7:25).

[17:5]  7 tn Heb “gates.”

[17:5]  8 tn Heb “stone them with stones so that they die” (KJV similar); NCV “throw stones at that person until he dies.”

[21:21]  9 tn The Hebrew term בִּעַרְתָּה (biartah), here and elsewhere in such contexts (cf. Deut 13:5; 17:7, 12; 19:19; 21:9), suggests God’s anger which consumes like fire (thus בָעַר, baar, “to burn”). See H. Ringgren, TDOT 2:203-4.

[21:21]  10 tc Some LXX traditions read הַנִּשְׁאָרִים (hannisharim, “those who remain”) for the MT’s יִשְׂרָאֵל (yisrael, “Israel”), understandable in light of Deut 19:20. However, the more difficult reading found in the MT is more likely original.

[22:21]  11 tn The Hebrew term נְבָלָה (nÿvalah) means more than just something stupid. It refers to a moral lapse so serious as to jeopardize the whole covenant community (cf. Gen 34:7; Judg 19:23; 20:6, 10; Jer 29:23). See C. Pan, NIDOTTE 3:11-13. Cf. NAB “she committed a crime against Israel.”

[22:21]  12 tn Heb “burn.” See note on Deut 21:21.

[22:22]  13 tn Heb “lying with” (so KJV, NASB), a Hebrew idiom for sexual relations.

[22:22]  14 tn Heb “a woman married to a husband.”

[22:22]  15 tn Heb “burn.” See note on the phrase “purge out” in Deut 21:21.

[22:23]  16 tn Heb “finds.”

[22:23]  17 tn Heb “lies with.”

[22:24]  18 tn Heb “humbled.”

[22:24]  19 tn Heb “wife.”

[22:24]  20 tn Heb “burn.” See note on the phrase “purge out” in Deut 21:21.
