Leviticus 13:20

Context
13:20 The priest will then examine it, 4  and if 5  it appears to be deeper than the skin 6  and its hair has turned white, then the priest is to pronounce the person unclean. 7  It is a diseased infection that has broken out in the boil. 8

Leviticus 13:31-32

Context
13:31 But if the priest examines the scall infection and it does not appear to be deeper than the skin, 9  and there is no black hair in it, then the priest is to quarantine the person with the scall infection for seven days. 10  13:32 The priest must then examine the infection on the seventh day, and if 11  the scall has not spread, there is no reddish yellow hair in it, and the scall does not appear to be deeper than the skin, 12

21:10 “‘The high 24  priest – who is greater than his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil is poured, who has been ordained 25  to wear the priestly garments – must neither dishevel the hair of his head nor tear his garments. 26

Leviticus 25:47

Leviticus 26:17

Leviticus 26:44

[13:4]  1 tn Heb “and if.”

[13:4]  2 tn Heb “and deep is not its appearance from the skin”; cf. NAB “does not seem to have penetrated below the skin.”

[13:4]  3 tn Heb “and the priest will shut up the infection seven days.”

[13:20]  4 tn Heb “and the priest shall see.” The pronoun “it” is unexpressed, but it should be assumed and it refers to the infection (cf. the note on v. 8 above).

[13:20]  5 tn Heb “and behold.”

[13:20]  6 tn Heb “and behold its appearance is low (שָׁפָל, shafal) ‘from’ (comparative מִן, min, “lower than”) the skin.” Compare “deeper” in v. 3 above where, however, a different word is used (עָמֹק, ’amoq), and see the note on “swelling” in v. 1 above (cf. J. E. Hartley, Leviticus [WBC], 192; note that, contrary to the MT, Tg. Onq. has עָמֹק in this verse as well as v. 4). The alternation of these two terms (i.e., “deeper” and “lower”) in vv. 25-26 below shows that they both refer to the same phenomenon. Some have argued that “this sore was lower than the surrounding skin” (J. Milgrom, Leviticus [AB], 1:773, 788), in which case “swelling” would be an inappropriate translation of שְׂאֵת (sÿet) in v. 19. It seems unlikely, however, that the surface of a “boil” would sink below the surface of the surrounding skin. The infectious pus etc. that makes up a boil normally causes swelling.

[13:20]  7 tn The declarative Piel of the verb טָמֵא (tame’, cf. the note on v. 3 above).

[13:20]  8 tn Heb “It is an infection of disease. In the boil it has broken out.” For the rendering “diseased infection” see the note on v. 2 above.

[13:31]  7 tn Heb “and behold there is not its appearance deep ‘from’ (comparative מִן, min, meaning “deeper than”) the skin.”

[13:31]  8 tn Heb “and the priest will shut up the infection of the scall seven days.”

[13:32]  10 tn Heb “and behold” (so KJV, ASV).

[13:32]  11 tn Heb “and the appearance of the scall is not deep ‘from’ (comparative מִן, min, meaning “deeper than”) the skin.”

[17:13]  13 tc A few medieval Hebrew mss, Smr, and Tg. Ps.-J. have “from the house of Israel” as in vv. 3, 8, and 10, but the LXX agrees with the MT.

[17:13]  14 tn Heb “from the sojourner who sojourns.”

[17:13]  15 tc The LXX, Syriac, Vulgate, and certain mss of Smr have “your” (plural) rather than “their” (cf. v. 10 above).

[17:13]  16 tn Heb “[wild] game of animal.”

[17:13]  17 tn That is, it must be a clean animal, not an unclean animal (cf. Lev 11).

[19:10]  16 tn Heb “And you shall not deal severely with your vineyard.”

[20:5]  19 tn The adjective “spiritual” has been supplied in the translation to clarify that this is not a reference to literal prostitution, but figuratively compares idolatry to prostitution.

[20:5]  20 tn Heb “to commit harlotry after Molech.” The translation employs “worshiping” here for clarity (cf. NAB, NCV, TEV, CEV, NLT). On the “cut off” penalty see the note on Lev 7:20.

[20:6]  22 sn For structure and coherence in Lev 20:6-27 see the note on v. 27 below.

[20:6]  23 tn See the note on the phrase “familiar spirits” in Lev 19:31 above.

[20:6]  24 tn Heb “I will give my faces.”

[21:10]  25 tn The adjective “high” has been supplied in the translation for clarity, as in many English versions.

[21:10]  26 tn Heb “and he has filled his hand.” For this expression see the note on Lev 8:33.

[21:10]  27 tn Regarding these signs of mourning see the note on Lev 10:6. His head had been anointed (v. 10a) so it must not be unkempt (v. 10b), and his garments were special priestly garments (v. 10a) so he must not tear them (v. 10b). In the translation “garments” has been employed rather than “clothes” to suggest that the special priestly garments are referred to here; cf. NRSV “nor tear his vestments.”

[25:47]  28 tn Heb “And if the hand of a foreigner and resident with you reaches” (cf. v. 26 for this idiom).

[25:47]  29 tn Heb “and.” The Hebrew conjunction ו (vav, “and”) can be considered to have resultative force here.

[25:47]  30 tn Heb “offshoot, descendant.”

[27:8]  31 tn Heb “and the priest shall cause him to be valued.”

[27:8]  32 tn Heb “on the mouth which the hand of the one who vowed reaches.”
