Exhortation to Holiness and Obedience

20:7 “‘You must sanctify yourselves and be holy, because I am the Lord your God. 20:8 You must be sure to obey my statutes. ¹  I am the Lord who sanctifies you.

Leviticus 21:15

21:15 He must not profane his children among his people, ²  for I am the Lord who sanctifies him.’”

Leviticus 27:17

27:17 If he consecrates his field in the jubilee year, ³  the conversion value will stand,

[20:8]  ¹ tn Heb “And you shall keep my statutes and you shall do them.” This appears to be a kind of verbal hendiadys, where the first verb is a modifier of the action of the second verb (see GKC 386 §120.d, although שָׁמַר [shamar, “to keep”] is not cited there; cf. Lev 22:31, etc.).

[21:15]  ¹ tc The MT has literally, “in his peoples,” but Smr, LXX, Syriac, Targum, and Tg. Ps.-J. have “in his people,” referring to the Israelites as a whole.

[27:17]  ¹ tn Heb “from the year of the jubilee.” For the meaning of “jubilee,” see the note on Lev 25:10 above.
