1:12 And Zechariah, visibly shaken when he saw the angel, ¹  was seized with fear. ²

15:20 So ³  he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way from home ⁴  his father saw him, and his heart went out to him; ⁵  he ran and hugged ⁶  his son ⁷  and kissed him.

[1:12]  ¹ tn The words “the angel” are not in the Greek text, but are implied. Direct objects were frequently omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

[1:12]  ² tn Or “and he was afraid”; Grk “fear fell upon him.” Fear is common when supernatural agents appear (1:29-30, 65; 2:9; 5:8-10; 9:34; 24:38; Exod 15:16; Judg 6:22-23; 13:6, 22; 2 Sam 6:9).

[15:20]  ³ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the result of the son’s decision to return home. Greek style often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” but English style generally does not.

[15:20]  ⁴ tn Grk “a long way off from [home].” The word “home” is implied (L&N 85.16).

[15:20]  ⁵ tn Or “felt great affection for him,” “felt great pity for him.”

[15:20]  ⁶ tn Grk “he fell on his neck,” an idiom for showing special affection for someone by throwing one’s arms around them. The picture is of the father hanging on the son’s neck in welcome.

[15:20]  ⁷ tn Grk “him”; the referent (the son) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
