1:50 from ¹  generation to generation he is merciful ²  to those who fear ³  him.

Luke 7:39

7:39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, ⁴  he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, ⁵  he would know who and what kind of woman ⁶  this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.”

Luke 9:55

9:55 But Jesus ⁷  turned and rebuked them, ⁸ 

[1:50]  ¹ tn Grk “and from.” Here καί (kai) has been translated by a semicolon to improve the English style.

[1:50]  ² sn God’s mercy refers to his “loyal love” or “steadfast love,” expressed in faithful actions, as the rest of the psalm illustrates.

[1:50]  ³ tn That is, “who revere.” This refers to those who show God a reverential respect for his sovereignty.

[7:39]  ⁴ tn The word “this” is not in the Greek text, but is implied. Direct objects were frequently omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

[7:39]  ⁵ tn This is a good example of a second class (contrary to fact) Greek conditional sentence. The Pharisee said, in effect, “If this man were a prophet (but he is not)…”

[7:39]  ⁶ sn The Pharisees believed in a form of separationism that would have prevented them from any kind of association with such a sinful woman.

[9:55]  ⁷ tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[9:55]  ⁸ tc Many mss ([D] K Γ Θ Ë^1,13 [579] 700 2542 pm it) have at the end of the verse (with slight variations) “and he said, ‘You do not know what sort of spirit you are of, for the Son of Man did not come to destroy people’s lives, but to save [them].’” This variant is clearly secondary, as it gives some content to the rebuke. Further, it is difficult to explain how such rich material would have been omitted by the rest of the witnesses, including the earliest and best mss.
