[1:77]  1 sn John’s role, to give his people knowledge of salvation, is similar to that of Jesus (Luke 3:1-14; 5:31-32).

[1:77]  2 sn Forgiveness is another major Lukan theme (Luke 4:18; 24:47; Acts 10:37).

[7:5]  3 tn Or “people.” The use of ἔθνος (eqnos, “nation”) here instead of “God” probably meant the man was not a full proselyte, but that he had simply been supportive of the Jews and their culture. He could have been a God-fearer. The Romans saw a stable religious community as politically helpful and often supported it (Josephus, Ant. 16.6.2 [16.162-165], 19.6.3 [19.300-311]).

[7:5]  4 tn In the Greek text, the pronoun αὐτός (autos) is included, making this emphatic. Naturally the force of this statement is causative, meaning the centurion either had the synagogue built or donated the cost of its construction.

[7:5]  5 sn See the note on synagogues in 4:15.

[11:12]  5 sn The two questions of vv. 11-12 expect the answer, “No father would do this!”

[15:5]  7 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[18:12]  9 sn The law only required fasting on the Day of Atonement. Such voluntary fasting as this practiced twice a week by the Pharisee normally took place on Monday and Thursday.

[18:12]  10 tn Or “I tithe.”

[20:23]  11 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[20:23]  12 tn Or “craftiness.” The term always has negative connotations in the NT (1 Cor 3:19; 2 Cor 4:2; 11:3; Eph 4:14).
