Luke 11:50

11:50 so that this generation may be held accountable ¹  for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning ²  of the world, ³ 

Luke 22:20

22:20 And in the same way he took ⁴  the cup after they had eaten, ⁵  saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant ⁶  in my blood.

Luke 5:37

5:37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. ⁷  If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.

[11:50]  ¹ tn Or “that this generation may be charged with”; or “the blood of all the prophets… may be required from this generation.” This is a warning of judgment. These people are responsible for the shedding of prophetic blood.

[11:50]  ³ tn The order of the clauses in this complicated sentence has been rearranged to simplify it for the modern reader.

[22:20]  ⁴ tn The words “he took” are not in the Greek text at this point, but are an understood repetition from v. 19.

[22:20]  ⁵ tn The phrase “after they had eaten” translates the temporal infinitive construction μετὰ τὸ δειπνῆσαι (meta to deipnhsai), where the verb δειπνέω (deipnew) means “to eat a meal” or “to have a meal.”

[22:20]  ⁶ sn Jesus’ death established the forgiveness promised in the new covenant of Jer 31:31. Jesus is reinterpreting the symbolism of the Passover meal, indicating the presence of a new era.

[5:37]  ⁷ sn Wineskins were bags made of skin or leather, used for storing wine in NT times. As the new wine fermented and expanded, it would stretch the new wineskins. Putting new (unfermented) wine in old wineskins, which had already been stretched, would result in the bursting of the wineskins.
