Luke 12:36

12:36 be like people ¹  waiting for their master to come back from the wedding celebration, ²  so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.

Luke 21:7

21:7 So ³  they asked him, ⁴  “Teacher, when will these things ⁵  happen? And what will be the sign that ⁶  these things are about to take place?”

[12:36]  ¹ tn That is, like slaves (who are mentioned later, vv. 37-38), although the term ἀνθρώποις (anqrwpoi") is used here. Since in this context it appears generic rather than gender-specific, the translation “people” is employed.

[12:36]  ² sn An ancient wedding celebration could last for days (Tob 11:18).

[21:7]  ³ tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of Jesus’ comments about the temple’s future destruction.

[21:7]  ⁴ tn Grk “asked him, saying.” The participle λέγοντες (legontes) is redundant in English and has not been translated.

[21:7]  ⁵ sn Both references to these things are plural, so more than the temple’s destruction is in view. The question may presuppose that such a catastrophe signals the end.
