[12:48]  1 tn Grk “did not know”; the phrase “his master’s will” is not in the Greek text, but is implied. Direct objects were frequently omitted in Greek when clear from the context, but must be supplied for the contemporary English reader.

[12:48]  2 tn Grk “blows.”

[12:48]  3 tn Grk “will receive few (blows).”

[12:48]  4 tn Grk “required from him”; but the words “from him” are redundant in English and have not been translated.

[12:48]  5 sn Entrusted with much. To be gifted with precious responsibility is something that requires faithfulness.

However, the text seems to treat the mourning as sincere, so their tears and lamenting would have been genuine.

[23:27]  14 tn Or “who were beating their breasts,” implying a ritualized form of mourning employed in Jewish funerals. See the note on the term “women” earlier in this verse.

[7:47]  19 tn Grk “for she loved much.” The connection between this statement and the preceding probably involves an ellipsis, to the effect that the ὅτι clause gives the evidence of forgiveness, not the ground. For similar examples of an “evidentiary” ὅτι, cf. Luke 1:22; 6:21; 13:2. See discussion in D. L. Bock, Luke [BECNT], 1:703-5. Further evidence that this is the case here is the final statement: “the one who is forgiven little loves little” means that the one who is forgiven little is thus not able to love much. The REB renders this verse: “her great love proves that her many sins have been forgiven; where little has been forgiven, little love is shown.”

[6:17]  25 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[6:17]  26 tn Or “on a plateau.” This could refer to a message given in a flat locale or in a flat locale in the midst of a more mountainous region (Jer 21:13; Isa 13:2). It is quite possible that this sermon is a summary version of the better known Sermon on the Mount from Matt 5-7.

[6:17]  27 tn Grk “large crowd.”

[6:17]  28 tn There is no verb in Greek at this point, but since “a large crowd” (see preceding tn) is in the nominative case, one needs to be supplied.
