17:25 But first he must ¹  suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

Luke 9:22

9:22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer ²  many things and be rejected by the elders, ³  chief priests, and experts in the law, ⁴  and be killed, and on the third day be raised.” ⁵ 

[17:25]  ¹ sn The Son of Man’s suffering and rejection by this generation is another “it is necessary” type of event in God’s plan (Luke 4:43; 24:7, 26, 44) and the fifth passion prediction in Luke’s account (9:22, 44; 12:50; 13:32-33; for the last, see 18:32-33).

[9:22]  ² sn The necessity that the Son of Man suffer is the particular point that needed emphasis, since for many 1st century Jews the Messiah was a glorious and powerful figure, not a suffering one.

[9:22]  ³ sn Rejection in Luke is especially by the Jewish leadership (here elders, chief priests, and experts in the law), though in Luke 23 almost all will join in.
