Luke 18:7

18:7 Won’t ¹  God give justice to his chosen ones, who cry out ²  to him day and night? ³  Will he delay ⁴  long to help them?

Luke 23:35

23:35 The people also stood there watching, but the rulers ridiculed ⁵  him, saying, “He saved others. Let him save ⁶  himself if ⁷  he is the Christ ⁸  of God, his chosen one!”

[18:7]  ² sn The prayers have to do with the righteous who cry out to him to receive justice. The context assumes the righteous are persecuted.

[18:7]  ³ tn The emphatic particles in this sentence indicate that God will indeed give justice to the righteous.

[18:7]  ⁴ sn The issue of delay has produced a whole host of views for this verse. (1) Does this assume provision to endure in the meantime? Or (2) does it mean God restricts the level of persecution until he comes? Either view is possible.

[23:35]  ⁵ tn A figurative extension of the literal meaning “to turn one’s nose up at someone”; here “ridicule, sneer at, show contempt for” (L&N 33.409).

[23:35]  ⁶ sn The irony in the statement Let him save himself is that salvation did come, but later, not while on the cross.

[23:35]  ⁷ tn This is a first class condition in the Greek text.

[23:35]  ⁸ tn Or “Messiah”; both “Christ” (Greek) and “Messiah” (Hebrew and Aramaic) mean “one who has been anointed.”
