11:38 The ²  Pharisee was astonished when he saw that Jesus ³  did not first wash his hands ⁴  before the meal.

[2:18]  ¹ tn Grk “marveled.” It is a hard word to translate with one term in this context. There is a mixture of amazement and pondering at work in considering the surprising events here. See Luke 1:21, 63; 2:33.

[11:38]  ³ tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[11:38]  ⁴ tn The words “his hands” are not in the Greek text, but have been supplied for clarity.
