The Beginning of Jesus’ Ministry in Galilee

4:14 Then ¹  Jesus, in the power of the Spirit, ²  returned to Galilee, and news about him spread ³  throughout the surrounding countryside. ⁴ 

Luke 5:5

5:5 Simon ⁵  answered, ⁶  “Master, ⁷  we worked hard all night and caught nothing! But at your word ⁸  I will lower ⁹  the nets.”

Luke 23:5

23:5 But they persisted ¹⁰  in saying, “He incites ¹¹  the people by teaching throughout all Judea. It started in Galilee and ended up here!” ¹² 

[4:14]  ¹ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[4:14]  ² sn Once again Jesus is directed by the Spirit. Luke makes a point about Jesus’ association with the Spirit early in his ministry (3:22, 4:1 [2x]; 4:18).

[4:14]  ³ tn Grk “went out.”

[4:14]  ⁴ tn Grk “all the surrounding region.”

[5:5]  ⁵ tn Grk “And Simon.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[5:5]  ⁶ tn Grk “answering, Simon said.” This is redundant in contemporary English and has been simplified in the translation to “Simon answered.”

[5:5]  ⁷ tn The word ἐπιστάτης is a term of respect for a person of high status (see L&N 87.50).

[5:5]  ⁸ tn The expression “at your word,” which shows Peter’s obedience, stands first in the Greek clause for emphasis.

[5:5]  ⁹ tn Or “let down.”

[23:5]  ⁹ tn Or “were adamant.” For “persisted in saying,” see L&N 68.71.

[23:5]  ¹⁰ sn He incites the people. The Jewish leadership claimed that Jesus was a political threat and had to be stopped. By reiterating this charge of stirring up rebellion, they pressured Pilate to act, or be accused of overlooking political threats to Rome.

[23:5]  ¹¹ tn Grk “beginning from Galilee until here.”
