[7:26]  1 tn John the Baptist is “more” because he introduces the one (Jesus) who brings the new era. The term is neuter, but may be understood as masculine in this context (BDAG 806 s.v. περισσότερος b.).

[20:47]  2 tn Grk “who,” continuing the sentence begun in v. 46.

[20:47]  3 sn How they were able to devour widows’ houses is debated. Did they seek too much for contributions, or take too high a commission for their work, or take homes after debts failed to be paid? There is too little said here to be sure.

[20:47]  4 tn Grk “houses,” “households”; however, the term can have the force of “property” or “possessions” as well (O. Michel, TDNT 5:131; BDAG 695 s.v. οἶκια 1.a).

[12:4]  3 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[12:4]  4 sn Judaism had a similar exhortation in 4 Macc 13:14-15.

[12:48]  4 tn Grk “did not know”; the phrase “his master’s will” is not in the Greek text, but is implied. Direct objects were frequently omitted in Greek when clear from the context, but must be supplied for the contemporary English reader.

[12:48]  5 tn Grk “blows.”

[12:48]  6 tn Grk “will receive few (blows).”

[12:48]  7 tn Grk “required from him”; but the words “from him” are redundant in English and have not been translated.

[12:48]  8 sn Entrusted with much. To be gifted with precious responsibility is something that requires faithfulness.

[12:48]  9 tn Grk “they will ask even more.”
