Luke 7:42

7:42 When they could not pay, he canceled ¹  the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”

Luke 20:25

20:25 So ²  he said to them, “Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” ³ 

[7:42]  ¹ tn The verb ἐχαρίσατο (ecarisato) could be translated as “forgave.” Of course this pictures the forgiveness of God’s grace, which is not earned but bestowed with faith (see v. 49).

[20:25]  ² tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “so” to indicate that Jesus’ pronouncement results from the opponents’ answer to his question.

[20:25]  ³ sn Jesus’ answer to give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s was a both/and, not the questioners’ either/or. So he slipped out of their trap.
