Luke 7:9

7:9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed ¹  at him. He turned and said to the crowd that followed him, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith!” ² 

Luke 9:11

9:11 But when the crowds found out, they followed him. He ³  welcomed them, spoke to them about the kingdom of God, ⁴  and cured those who needed healing. ⁵ 

Luke 18:22

18:22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have ⁶  and give the money ⁷  to the poor, ⁸  and you will have treasure ⁹  in heaven. Then ¹⁰  come, follow me.”

Luke 22:10

22:10 He said to them, “Listen, ¹¹  when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water ¹²  will meet you. ¹³  Follow him into the house that he enters,

[7:9]  ¹ tn Or “pleased with him and amazed.” The expanded translation brings out both Jesus’ sense of wonder at the deep insight of the soldier and the pleasure he had that he could present the man as an example of faith.

[7:9]  ² sn There are two elements to the faith that Jesus commended: The man’s humility and his sense of Jesus’ authority which recognized that only Jesus’ word, not his physical presence, were required.

[9:11]  ³ tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[9:11]  ⁴ sn The kingdom of God is a major theme of Jesus. It is a realm in which Jesus rules and to which those who trust him belong. See Luke 6:20; 11:20; 17:20-21.

[9:11]  ⁵ sn Again the combination of word (spoke to them) and healing (cured, compassionate deed) is what summarizes Jesus’ ministry: See Luke 4:38-44; 6:17-19; 7:22 (as also the disciples, 9:6).

[18:22]  ⁶ tn The words “the money” are not in the Greek text, but are implied. Direct objects were frequently omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

[18:22]  ⁸ sn The call for sacrifice comes with a promise of eternal reward: …you will have treasure in heaven. Jesus’ call is a test to see how responsive the man is to God’s direction through him. [18:22]  ⁹ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the conversation.

[22:10]  ⁷ tn Grk “behold.”

[22:10]  ⁸ sn Since women usually carried these jars, it would have been no problem for Peter and John to recognize the man Jesus was referring to.

[22:10]  ⁹ sn Jesus is portrayed throughout Luke 22-23 as very aware of what will happen, almost directing events. Here this is indicated by his prediction that a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.
