Luke 9:24

9:24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, ¹  but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

Luke 13:8

13:8 But the worker ²  answered him, ‘Sir, leave it alone this year too, until I dig around it and put fertilizer ³  on it.

[9:24]  ¹ sn The point of the saying whoever wants to save his life will lose it is that if one comes to Jesus then rejection by many will certainly follow. If self-protection is a key motivation, then one will not respond to Jesus and will not be saved. One who is willing to risk rejection will respond and find true life.

[13:8]  ² tn Grk “he”; the referent (the worker who tended the vineyard) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[13:8]  ³ tn Grk “toss manure [on it].” This is a reference to manure used as fertilizer.
