13:4 “Tell us, when will these things ¹  happen? And what will be the sign that all these things are about to take place?”

13:22 For false messiahs ²  and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, the elect.

16:17 These signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages; ³ 

[13:4]  ¹ sn Both references to these things are plural, so more than the temple’s destruction is in view. The question may presuppose that such a catastrophe signals the end.

[13:22]  ² tn Or “false christs”; both “Christ” (Greek) and “Messiah” (Hebrew and Aramaic) mean “one who has been anointed.”

[16:17]  ³ tn Grk “tongues,” though the word is used figuratively (perhaps as a metonymy of cause for effect). To “speak in tongues” meant to “speak in a foreign language,” though one that was new to the one speaking it and therefore due to supernatural causes.
