The Plan to Betray Jesus

14:10 Then ¹  Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus into their hands. ²  14:11 When they heard this, they were delighted ³  and promised to give him money. ⁴  So ⁵  Judas ⁶  began looking for an opportunity to betray him.

Betrayal and Arrest

14:43 Right away, while Jesus ⁷  was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived. ⁸  With him came a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and experts in the law ⁹  and elders. 14:44 (Now the betrayer ¹⁰  had given them a sign, saying, “The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him and lead him away under guard.”) ¹¹  14:45 When Judas ¹²  arrived, he went up to Jesus ¹³  immediately and said, “Rabbi!” and kissed ¹⁴  him. 14:46 Then they took hold of him ¹⁵  and arrested him.

[14:10]  ¹ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[14:11]  ³ sn The leaders were delighted when Judas contacted them about betraying Jesus, because it gave them the opportunity they had been looking for, and they could later claim that Jesus had been betrayed by one of his own disciples.

[14:11]  ⁴ sn Matt 26:15 states the amount of money they gave Judas was thirty pieces of silver (see also Matt 27:3-4; Zech 11:12-13).
