3:2 They watched ¹  Jesus ²  closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath, ³  so that they could accuse him.

4:37 Now ⁴  a great windstorm ⁵  developed and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was nearly swamped.

Mark 10:8

10:8 and the two will become one flesh. ⁶  So they are no longer two, but one flesh.

[3:2]  ¹ sn The term translated watched…closely is emotive, since it carries negative connotations. It means they were watching him out of the corner of their eye or spying on him.

[3:2]  ² tn Grk “him”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[3:2]  ³ sn The background for this is the view that only if life was endangered should one attempt to heal on the Sabbath (see the Mishnah, m. Shabbat 6.3; 12.1; 18.3; 19.2; m. Yoma 8.6).

[4:37]  ⁴ tn Grk “And.” Here καί (kai) has been translated as “now” to indicate the transition to a new topic.

[4:37]  ⁵ tn Or “a squall.”

[10:8]  ⁷ sn A quotation from Gen 2:24. The “two” refers to husband and wife, not father and mother mentioned in the previous verse. See the tc note on “mother” in v. 7 for discussion.
