3:4 Then ¹  he said to them, “Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath, or evil, to save a life or destroy it?” But they were silent.

Mark 15:31

15:31 In the same way even the chief priests – together with the experts in the law ²  – were mocking him among themselves: ³  “He saved others, but he cannot save himself!

Mark 8:35

8:35 For whoever wants to save his life ⁴  will lose it, ⁵  but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it.

[3:4]  ¹ tn Grk “And.” Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[15:31]  ² tn Or “with the scribes.” See the note on the phrase “experts in the law” in 1:22. Only “chief priests” is in the nominative case; this sentence structure attempts to capture this emphasis.

[8:35]  ⁴ sn The point of the saying whoever wants to save his life will lose it is that if one comes to Jesus then rejection by many will certainly follow. If self-protection is a key motivation, then one will not respond to Jesus and will not be saved. One who is willing to risk rejection will respond and find true life.
