Matthew 2:11

2:11 As they came into the house and saw the child with Mary his mother, they bowed down ¹  and worshiped him. They opened their treasure boxes and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, ²  and myrrh. ³ 

Matthew 11:23

11:23 And you, Capernaum, ⁴  will you be exalted to heaven? ⁵  No, you will be thrown down to Hades! ⁶  For if the miracles done among you had been done in Sodom, it would have continued to this day.

Matthew 24:2

24:2 And he said to them, ⁷  “Do you see all these things? I tell you the truth, ⁸  not one stone will be left on another. ⁹  All will be torn down!” ¹⁰ 

[2:11]  ¹ tn Grk “they fell down.” BDAG 815 s.v. πίπτω 1.b.α.ב has “fall down, throw oneself to the ground as a sign of devotion, before high-ranking persons or divine beings.”

[2:11]  ² sn Frankincense refers to the aromatic resin of certain trees, used as a sweet-smelling incense (L&N 6.212).

[2:11]  ³ sn Myrrh consisted of the aromatic resin of certain shrubs (L&N 6.208). It was used in preparing a corpse for burial.

[11:23]  ⁴ sn Capernaum was a town on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, 680 ft (204 m) below sea level. It was a major trade and economic center in the North Galilean region.

[11:23]  ⁵ tn The interrogative particle introducing this question expects a negative reply.

[11:23]  ⁶ sn In the OT, Hades was known as Sheol. It is the place where the unrighteous will reside (Luke 10:15; 16:23; Rev 20:13-14).

[24:2]  ⁷ tn Grk “answering, he said to them.” The participle ἀποκριθείς (ajpokriqei") is redundant in English and has not been translated.
