2:22 But when he heard that Archelaus ¹  was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, ²  he was afraid to go there. After being warned in a dream, he went to the regions of Galilee.

Matthew 17:25

17:25 He said, “Yes.” When Peter came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, ³  “What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly kings collect tolls or taxes – from their sons ⁴  or from foreigners?”

[2:22]  ¹ sn Archelaus took after his father Herod the Great in terms of cruelty and ruthlessness, so Joseph was afraid to go there. After further direction in a dream, he went instead to Galilee.

[17:25]  ³ tn Grk “spoke first to him, saying.” The participle λέγων (legwn) is redundant in English and has not been translated.

[17:25]  ⁴ sn The phrase their sons may mean “their citizens,” but the term “sons” has been retained here in order to preserve the implicit comparison between the Father and his Son, Jesus.
