Signs of the End of the Age

24:3 As ¹  he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, his disciples came to him privately and said, “Tell us, when will these things ²  happen? And what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

Matthew 24:27

24:27 For just like the lightning ³  comes from the east and flashes to the west, so the coming of the Son of Man will be.

Matthew 24:37

24:37 For just like the days of Noah ⁴  were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be.

Matthew 24:39

24:39 And they knew nothing until the flood came and took them all away. ⁵  It will be the same at the coming of the Son of Man. ⁶

[24:3]  ² sn Because the phrase these things is plural, more than the temple’s destruction is in view. The question may presuppose that such a catastrophe signals the end.

[24:27]  ³ sn The Son of Man’s coming in power will be sudden and obvious like lightning. No one will need to point it out.

[24:37]  ⁵ sn Like the days of Noah, the time of the flood in Gen 6:5-8:22, the judgment will come as a surprise as people live their day to day lives.

[24:39]  ⁷ sn Like the flood that came and took them all away, the coming judgment associated with the Son of Man will condemn many.

[24:39]  ⁸ tn Grk “So also will be the coming of the Son of Man.”
