Matthew 26:18

Context
26:18 He 1  said, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is near. I will observe the Passover with my disciples at your house.”’”

Mark 11:2-3

Context
11:2 and said to them, “Go to the village ahead of you. 2  As soon as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden. 3  Untie it and bring it here. 11:3 If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it 4  and will send it back here soon.’”

Mark 14:13-16

Context
14:13 He sent two of his disciples and told them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar 5  of water will meet you. Follow him. 14:14 Wherever he enters, tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’ 14:15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.” 14:16 So 6  the disciples left, went 7  into the city, and found things just as he had told them, 8  and they prepared the Passover.

Luke 19:30-32

Context
19:30 telling them, 9  “Go to the village ahead of you. 10  When 11  you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden. 12  Untie it and bring it here. 19:31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs 13  it.’” 19:32 So those who were sent ahead found 14  it exactly 15  as he had told them.

John 2:5-8

Context
2:5 His mother told the servants, “Whatever he tells you, do it.” 16

2:6 Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washing, 17  each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 18  2:7 Jesus told the servants, 19  “Fill the water jars with water.” So they filled them up to the very top. 2:8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the head steward,” 20  and they did.

[26:18]  1 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[11:2]  2 tn Grk “the village lying before you” (BDAG 530 s.v. κατέναντι 2.b).

[11:2]  3 tn Grk “a colt tied there on which no one of men has ever sat.”

[11:3]  4 sn The custom called angaria allowed the impressment of animals for service to a significant figure.

[14:13]  5 sn Since women usually carried these jars, it would have been no problem for the two disciples (Luke 22:8 states that they were Peter and John) to recognize the man Jesus was referring to.

[14:16]  6 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the flow within the narrative.

[14:16]  7 tn Grk “and came.”

[14:16]  8 sn The author’s note that the disciples found things just as he had told them shows that Jesus’ word could be trusted.

[19:30]  9 tn Grk “saying.”

[19:30]  10 tn Grk “the village lying before [you]” (BDAG 530 s.v. κατέναντι 2.a).

[19:30]  11 tn Grk “in which entering.” This is a continuation of the previous sentence in Greek, but because of the length and complexity of the construction a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[19:30]  12 tn Grk “a colt tied there on which no one of men has ever sat.”

[19:31]  13 sn The custom called angaria allowed the impressment of animals for service to a significant figure.

[19:32]  14 tn Grk “sent ahead and went and found.”

[19:32]  15 sn Exactly as he had told them. Nothing in Luke 19-23 catches Jesus by surprise. Often he directs the action.

[2:5]  16 tn The pronoun “it” is not in the Greek text, but has been supplied. Direct objects in Greek were often omitted when clear from the context.

[2:6]  17 tn Grk “for the purification of the Jews.”

[2:6]  18 tn Grk “holding two or three metretes” (about 75 to 115 liters). Each of the pots held 2 or 3 μετρηταί (metrhtai). A μετρητῆς (metrhths) was about 9 gallons (40 liters); thus each jar held 18-27 gallons (80-120 liters) and the total volume of liquid involved was 108-162 gallons (480-720 liters).

[2:7]  19 tn Grk “them” (it is clear from the context that the servants are addressed).

[2:8]  20 tn Or “the master of ceremonies.”
