  Lo! from the desert homes Where he hath hid so long, The new Elias comes, In sternest wisdom strong; The voice that cries Of Christ on high, And judgment nigh From opening skies. Your God e’en now doth stand At Heaven’s opening door; His fan is in His hand, And He will purge His floor; The wheat He claims And with Him stows, The chaff He throws To quenchless flames. Ye haughty mountains, bow Your sky-aspiring heads; Ye valleys, hiding low, Lift up your gentle meads; Make His way plain Your king before, For evermore He comes to reign.   Come, Holy Spirit, Dove divine, Display Thy glorious grace; Unfold the truth, that it may shine, And show the Savior’s face. Dark error’s cloud from us remove, Which intercepts the light; And give us wisdom still to prove God’s way alone is right. Touch our dull ears with healing power, That we the Lord may hear, And in this glad, this holy hour, May yield Him perfect fear. Within us let His image grow, His will our wills control, Nor other master let us know Of life, or heart, or soul.   The Son of Man from Jordan rose, And prayed to God above; When lo, the opening heav’ns disclose A swift descending Dove. The Spirit, lighting on His brow, Anoints the Holy One; The Father’s voice declaring, “Thou Art My belovèd Son.” So when, through His baptizing blessed The Font new birth conveys, Man kneels a son of God confessed, Heav’n opens as he prays. Fair innocency, like the dove’s, Invests him, purged from sin; For God the brooding Spirit moves, Directs and rules within. O Christ, whose mercy cleansed our stain With streams of grace divine, Let us not soil the robes again Made white in blood of Thine. Redeemer of a world undone, We praise Thee and adore, Jesu, with God the Father One, And Spirit evermore.
