Matthew 4:19

4:19 He said to them, “Follow me, and I will turn you into fishers of people.” ¹ 

Matthew 24:18

24:18 and the one in the field must not turn back to get his cloak.

Matthew 10:38

10:38 And whoever does not take up his cross ²  and follow me is not worthy of me.

[4:19]  ¹ tn The Greek term ἄνθρωπος (anqrwpos) is used here in a generic sense, referring to both men and women, thus “people.”

[10:38]  ² sn It was customary practice in a Roman crucifixion for the prisoner to be made to carry his own cross. Jesus is speaking figuratively here in the context of rejection. If the priority is not one’s allegiance to Jesus, then one will not follow him in the face of possible rejection.
