Pure-hearted Giving

6:1 “Be ¹  careful not to display your righteousness merely to be seen by people. ²  Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven.

Matthew 7:11

7:11 If you then, although you are evil, ³  know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts ⁴  to those who ask him!

Matthew 10:13-14

10:13 And if the house is worthy, let your peace come on it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. ⁵  10:14 And if anyone will not welcome you or listen to your message, shake the dust off ⁶  your feet as you leave that house or that town.

Matthew 17:17

17:17 Jesus answered, ⁷  “You ⁸  unbelieving ⁹  and perverse generation! How much longer ¹⁰  must I be with you? How much longer must I endure ¹¹  you? ¹²  Bring him here to me.”

[6:1]  ¹ tc ‡ Several mss (א L Z Θ Ë¹ 33 892 1241 1424 al) have δέ (de, “but, now”) at the beginning of this verse; the reading without δέ is supported by B D W 0250 ˹³ Ï lat. A decision is difficult, but apparently the conjunction was added by later scribes to indicate a transition in the thought-flow of the Sermon on the Mount. NA²⁷ has δέ in brackets, indicating reservations about its authenticity.

[6:1]  ² tn Grk “before people in order to be seen by them.”

[7:11]  ³ tn The participle ὄντες (ontes) has been translated concessively.

[7:11]  ⁴ sn The provision of the good gifts is probably a reference to the wisdom and guidance supplied in response to repeated requests. The teaching as a whole stresses not that we get everything we want, but that God gives the good that we need.

[10:13]  ⁵ sn The response to these messengers determines how God’s blessing is bestowed – if the messengers are not welcomed, their blessing will return to them. Jesus shows just how important their mission is by this remark.

[10:14]  ⁷ sn To shake the dust off represented shaking off the uncleanness from one’s feet; see Luke 10:11; Acts 13:51; 18:6. It was a sign of rejection.

[17:17]  ⁹ tn Grk “And answering, Jesus said.” This is somewhat redundant and has been simplified in the translation.

[17:17]  ¹⁰ tn Grk “O.” The marker of direct address, ὦ (w), is functionally equivalent to a vocative and is represented in the translation by “you.”

[17:17]  ¹¹ tn Or “faithless.”

[17:17]  ¹² tn Grk “how long.”

[17:17]  ¹³ tn Or “put up with.” See Num 11:12; Isa 46:4.

[17:17]  ¹⁴ sn The pronouns you…you are plural, indicating that Jesus is speaking to a group rather than an individual.
