Matthew 6:30

6:30 And if this is how God clothes the wild grass, ¹  which is here today and tomorrow is tossed into the fire to heat the oven, ²  won’t he clothe you even more, ³  you people of little faith?

Matthew 11:8

11:8 What ⁴  did you go out to see? A man dressed in fancy clothes? ⁵  Look, those who wear fancy clothes are in the homes of kings! ⁶ 

[6:30]  ¹ tn Grk “grass of the field.”

[6:30]  ² tn Grk “into the oven.” The expanded translation “into the fire to heat the oven” has been used to avoid misunderstanding; most items put into modern ovens are put there to be baked, not burned.

[6:30]  ³ sn The phrase even more is a typical form of rabbinic argumentation, from the lesser to the greater. If God cares for the little things, surely he will care for the more important things.

[11:8]  ⁴ tn Grk “But what.” Here ἀλλά (alla, a strong contrastive in Greek) produces a somewhat awkward sense in English, and has not been translated. The same situation occurs at the beginning of v. 9.

[11:8]  ⁵ sn The reference to fancy clothes makes the point that John was not rich or powerful, in that he did not come from the wealthy classes.
