[1:2]  1 tn Heb “brothers.”

[1:2]  2 tn The Hebrew text does not include the words “to me”; these words were supplied in the translation for the sake of clarity.

[1:2]  3 map For location see Map5 B1; Map6 F3; Map7 E2; Map8 F2; Map10 B3; JP1 F4; JP2 F4; JP3 F4; JP4 F4.

[3:7]  4 tn Heb “to the seat.”

[4:22]  7 tn Heb “said [to].”

[4:23]  10 tn Heb “strip off our garments.”

[4:23]  11 tc Heb “a man, his weapon, the waters.” The MT, if in fact it is correct, is elliptical and difficult. Some scholars emend the MT reading הַמָּיִם (hammayim, “the waters”) to בִּמִנוֹ (bimino, “in his right hand”; cf. NAB, NRSV) or מִינוּ(י)הֵ (heminu, “they held on the right side”).

[5:17]  13 tn Heb “who were gathered around us at my table.”

[5:17]  14 tn Or “from the Gentiles.” The same Hebrew word can refer to “the Gentiles” or “the nations.” Cf. the phrase in 6:16.

[6:11]  16 tn Heb “go into the temple and live.”

[7:2]  19 map For location see Map5 B1; Map6 F3; Map7 E2; Map8 F2; Map10 B3; JP1 F4; JP2 F4; JP3 F4; JP4 F4.

[7:2]  20 tn Some have suggested that “Hananiah” is another name for Hanani, Nehemiah’s brother, so that only one individual is mentioned here. However, the third person plural in v. 3 indicates two people are in view.

[7:6]  22 tn Heb “the sons of”; KJV, ASV “the children of”; NAB “the inhabitants of.”

[7:6]  23 tn Heb “who were going up.”

[7:6]  24 tc One medieval Hebrew manuscript has “to Babylon.” Cf. Ezra 2:1.

[7:7]  25 tn Heb “the men of the people of Israel.” Some English versions translate as “the people from Israel” (NCV) or “the Israelite people” (NRSV), but “men” should be retained because the following numbers presumably include only adult males.

[12:24]  28 tn Heb “in [accord with] the commandment of.”

[12:36]  31 tn Or “prescribed by” (NIV, NLT); TEV “of the kind played by.” The precise relationship of these musical instruments to David is not clear.

[12:36]  32 tn Heb “was before them.”

[13:25]  34 tn Heb “give.”
