Opposition to the Rebuilding Efforts Continues

6:1 When Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall and no breach remained in it (even though up to that time I had not positioned doors in the gates),

Nehemiah 9:27-28

9:27 Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who oppressed them. But in the time of their distress they called to you, and you heard from heaven. In your abundant compassion you provided them with deliverers to rescue them from ¹  their adversaries.

9:28 “Then, when they were at rest again, they went back to doing evil before you. Then you abandoned them to ²  their enemies, and they gained dominion over them. When they again cried out to you, in your compassion you heard from heaven and rescued them time and again.

Nehemiah 10:34

10:34 “We – the priests, the Levites, and the people – have cast lots concerning the wood offerings, to bring them to the temple of our God according to our families ³  at the designated times year by year to burn on the altar of the LORD our God, as is written in the law.

Nehemiah 13:21

13:21 But I warned them and said, ⁴  “Why do you spend the night by the wall? If you repeat this, I will forcibly remove you!” ⁵  From that time on they did not show up on the Sabbath. ⁶

[9:28]  ¹ tn Heb “in the hand of” (so KJV, ASV); NAB “to the power of.”

[10:34]  ¹ tn Heb “the house of our fathers.”

[13:21]  ¹ tn The Hebrew text includes the words “to them,” but they have been excluded from the translation for stylistic reasons.

[13:21]  ² tn Heb “I will send a hand on you.”

[13:21]  ³ sn This statement contains a great deal of restrained humor. The author clearly takes pleasure in the effectiveness of the measures that he had enacted.
