Nehemiah 8:1

8:1 all the people gathered together ¹  in the plaza which was in front of the Water Gate. They asked ²  Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses which the LORD had commanded Israel.

Nehemiah 10:29

10:29 hereby participate with their colleagues the town leaders ³  and enter into a curse and an oath ⁴  to adhere to ⁵  the law of God which was given through Moses the servant of God, and to obey ⁶  carefully all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, ⁷  along with his ordinances and his statutes.

13:1 On that day the book of Moses was read aloud in the hearing ⁸  of the people. They found ⁹  written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite may ever enter the assembly of God,

[10:29]  ³ tn Heb “the nobles.”

[10:29]  ⁴ tn The expression “a curse and an oath” may be a hendiadys, meaning “an oath with penalties.”

[10:29]  ⁵ tn Heb “to walk in.”

[10:29]  ⁶ tn Heb “keep.” See the note on the word “obey” in Neh 1:5.

[10:29]  ⁷ tn The Hebrew term translated “Lord” here is אֲדֹנָי (’adonay).

[13:1]  ⁵ tn Heb “ears.”

[13:1]  ⁶ tn Heb “it was found.” The Hebrew verb is passive.
