Numbers 14:30-31

Context
14:30 You will by no means enter into the land where 1  I swore 2  to settle 3  you. The only exceptions are Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. 14:31 But I will bring in your little ones, whom you said would become victims of war, 4  and they will enjoy 5  the land that you have despised.

Deuteronomy 1:39

Context
1:39 Also, your infants, who you thought would die on the way, 6  and your children, who as yet do not know good from bad, 7  will go there; I will give them the land and they will possess it.

Joshua 4:22-24

Context
4:22 explain 8  to your children, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan River 9  on dry ground.’ 4:23 For the Lord your God dried up the water of the Jordan before you while you crossed over. It was just like when the Lord your God dried up the Red Sea before us while we crossed it. 10  4:24 He has done this so 11  all the nations 12  of the earth might recognize the Lord’s power 13  and so you might always obey 14  the Lord your God.”

Joshua 23:14

Context

23:14 “Look, today I am about to die. 15  You know with all your heart and being 16  that not even one of all the faithful promises the Lord your God made to you is left unfulfilled; every one was realized – not one promise is unfulfilled! 17

[14:30]  1 tn The relative pronoun “which” is joined with the resumptive pronoun “in it” to form a smoother reading “where.”

[14:30]  2 tn The Hebrew text uses the anthropomorphic expression “I raised my hand” in taking an oath.

[14:30]  3 tn Heb “to cause you to dwell; to cause you to settle.”

[14:31]  4 tn Or “plunder.”

[14:31]  5 tn Heb “know.”

[1:39]  6 tn Heb “would be a prey.”

[1:39]  7 sn Do not know good from bad. This is a figure of speech called a merism (suggesting a whole by referring to its extreme opposites). Other examples are the tree of “the knowledge of good and evil” (Gen 2:9), the boy who knows enough “to reject the wrong and choose the right” (Isa 7:16; 8:4), and those who “cannot tell their right hand from their left” (Jonah 4:11). A young child is characterized by lack of knowledge.

[4:22]  8 tn Heb “make known.”

[4:22]  9 tn Heb “crossed this Jordan”; the word “River” is not in the Hebrew text, but has been supplied to clarify the meaning.

[4:23]  10 tn Heb “just as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea when he dried [it] up before us while we crossed over.”

[4:24]  11 tn Heb “in order that.”

[4:24]  12 tn Or “peoples.”

[4:24]  13 tn Heb “know the hand of the Lord that it is strong.”

[4:24]  14 tn Heb “fear.”

[23:14]  15 tn Heb “go the way of all the earth.”

[23:14]  16 tn Or “soul.”

[23:14]  17 tn Heb “one word from all these words which the Lord your God spoke to you has not fallen, the whole has come to pass for you, one word from it has not fallen.”
