Numbers 17:2

Context
17:2 “Speak to the Israelites, and receive from them a staff from each tribe, 1  one from every tribal leader, 2  twelve staffs; you must write each man’s name on his staff.

Joshua 7:14-26

Context
7:14 In the morning you must approach in tribal order. 3  The tribe the Lord selects 4  must approach by clans. The clan the Lord selects must approach by families. 5  The family the Lord selects must approach man by man. 6  7:15 The one caught with the riches 7  must be burned up 8  along with all who belong to him, because he violated the Lord’s covenant and did such a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”

7:16 Bright and early the next morning Joshua made Israel approach in tribal order 9  and the tribe of Judah was selected. 7:17 He then made the clans of Judah approach and the clan of the Zerahites was selected. He made the clan of the Zerahites approach and Zabdi 10  was selected. 11  7:18 He then made Zabdi’s 12  family approach man by man 13  and Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was selected. 7:19 So Joshua said to Achan, “My son, honor 14  the Lord God of Israel and give him praise! Tell me what you did; don’t hide anything from me!” 7:20 Achan told Joshua, “It is true. I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel in this way: 15  7:21 I saw among the goods we seized a nice robe from Babylon, 16  two hundred silver pieces, 17  and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels. I wanted them, so I took them. They are hidden in the ground right in the middle of my tent with the silver underneath.”

7:22 Joshua sent messengers who ran to the tent. The things were hidden right in his tent, with the silver underneath. 18  7:23 They took it all from the middle of the tent, brought it to Joshua and all the Israelites, and placed 19  it before the Lord. 7:24 Then Joshua and all Israel took Achan, son of Zerah, along with the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons, daughters, ox, donkey, sheep, tent, and all that belonged to him and brought them up to the Valley of Disaster. 20  7:25 Joshua said, “Why have you brought disaster 21  on us? The Lord will bring disaster on you today!” All Israel stoned him to death. (They also stoned and burned the others.) 22  7:26 Then they erected over him a large pile of stones (it remains to this very day 23 ) and the Lord’s anger subsided. So that place is called the Valley of Disaster to this very day.

Micah 5:2

Context
A King Will Come and a Remnant Will Prosper

5:2 (5:1) As for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, 24

seemingly insignificant 25  among the clans of Judah –

from you a king will emerge who will rule over Israel on my behalf, 26

one whose origins 27  are in the distant past. 28

[7:14]  4 tn Heb “takes forcefully, seizes.”

[7:14]  5 tn Heb “houses.”

[7:15]  7 tn Heb “with what was set apart [to the Lord].”

[7:15]  8 tn Heb “burned with fire.”

[7:17]  10 tn See the note on “Zabdi” in 1 Chr 7:1.

[7:17]  11 tn Heb “and he selected Zabdi.” The Lord is the apparent subject. The LXX supports reading a passive (Niphal) form here, as does the immediate context.

[7:18]  12 tn Heb “his”; the referent (Zabdi) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[7:18]  13 tn Heb “by men.”

[7:19]  14 tn Heb “give glory to.”

[7:20]  15 tn Heb “like this and like this I did.”

[7:21]  16 tn Heb “Shinar,” a reference to Babylon (cf. Gen 10:10; 11:2; 14:1). Many modern translations retain the Hebrew name “Shinar” (cf. NEB, NRSV) but some use the more familiar “Babylon” (cf. NIV, NLT).

[7:21]  17 tn Heb “shekels.”

[7:22]  18 tn Heb “Look, [it was] hidden in his tent, and the silver was beneath it.”

[7:23]  19 tn Heb “poured out,” probably referring to the way the silver pieces poured out of their container.

[7:24]  20 tn Or “Trouble” The name is “Achor” in Hebrew, which means “disaster” or “trouble” (also in v. 26).

[7:25]  21 tn Or “trouble.” The word is “achor” in Hebrew (also in the following clause).

[7:25]  22 tc Heb “and they burned them with fire and they stoned them with stones.” These words are somewhat parenthetical in nature and are omitted in the LXX; they may represent a later scribal addition.

[7:26]  23 tc Heb “to this day.” The phrase “to this day” is omitted in the LXX and may represent a later scribal addition.

[5:2]  24 sn Ephrathah is either an alternate name for Bethlehem or the name of the district in which Bethlehem was located. See Ruth 4:11.

[5:2]  25 tn Heb “being small.” Some omit לִהְיוֹת (lihyot, “being”) because it fits awkwardly and appears again in the next line.

[5:2]  26 tn Heb “from you for me one will go out to be a ruler over Israel.”

[5:2]  27 tn Heb “his goings out.” The term may refer to the ruler’s origins (cf. NAB, NIV, NRSV, NLT) or to his activities.

[5:2]  28 tn Heb “from the past, from the days of antiquity.” Elsewhere both phrases refer to the early periods in the history of the world or of the nation of Israel. For מִקֶּדֶם (miqqedem, “from the past”) see Neh 12:46; Pss 74:12; 77:11; Isa 45:21; 46:10. For מִימֵי עוֹלָם (mimeyolam, “from the days of antiquity”) see Isa 63:9, 11; Amos 9:11; Mic 7:14; Mal 3:4. In Neh 12:46 and Amos 9:11 the Davidic era is in view.
