Numbers 26:53-56

Context
26:53 “To these the land must be divided as an inheritance according to the number of the names. 26:54 To a larger group you will give a larger inheritance, 1  and to a smaller group you will give a smaller inheritance. 2  To each one its inheritance must be given according to the number of people in it. 3  26:55 The land must be divided by lot; and they will inherit in accordance with the names of their ancestral tribes. 26:56 Their inheritance must be apportioned 4  by lot among the larger and smaller groups.

Numbers 33:54

Context
33:54 You must divide the land by lot for an inheritance among your families. To a larger group you must give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group you must give a smaller inheritance. Everyone’s inheritance must be in the place where his lot falls. You must inherit according to your ancestral 5  tribes.

Numbers 32:2-14

Context
32:2 the Gadites and the Reubenites came and addressed Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the community. They said, 32:3 “Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, 6  Nebo, and Beon, 7  32:4 the land that the Lord subdued 8  before the community of Israel, is ideal for cattle, and your servants have cattle.” 32:5 So they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, 9  let this land be given to your servants for our inheritance. Do not have us cross 10  the Jordan River.” 11 

Moses’ Response

32:6 Moses said to the Gadites and the Reubenites, “Must your brothers go to war while you 12  remain here? 32:7 Why do you frustrate the intent 13  of the Israelites to cross over into the land which the Lord has given them? 32:8 Your fathers did the same thing when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. 32:9 When 14  they went up to the Eshcol Valley and saw the land, they frustrated the intent of the Israelites so that they did not enter 15  the land that the Lord had given 16  them. 32:10 So the anger of the Lord was kindled that day, and he swore, 32:11 ‘Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, 17  not 18  one of the men twenty years old and upward 19  who came from Egypt will see the land that I swore to give 20  to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, 32:12 except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the Lord wholeheartedly.’ 32:13 So the Lord’s anger was kindled against the Israelites, and he made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until all that generation that had done wickedly before 21  the Lord was finished. 22  32:14 Now look, you are standing in your fathers’ place, a brood of sinners, to increase still further the fierce wrath of the Lord against the Israelites.

Ezekiel 47:13-23

Boundaries for the Land

47:13 This is what the sovereign Lord says: “Here 23  are the borders 24  you will observe as you allot the land to the twelve tribes of Israel. (Joseph will have two portions.) 25  47:14 You must divide it equally just as I vowed to give it to your forefathers; 26  this land will be assigned as your inheritance. 27 

47:15 “This will be the border of the land: 28  On the north side, from the Great Sea by way of Hethlon to the entrance of Zedad; 47:16 Hamath, Berothah, Sibraim, which is between the border of Damascus and the border of Hamath, as far as Hazer-hattikon, which is on the border of Hauran. 47:17 The border will run from the sea to Hazar-enan, at the border of Damascus, and on the north is the border of Hamath. This is the north side. 47:18 On the east side, between Hauran and Damascus, and between Gilead and the land of Israel, will be the Jordan. You will measure from the border to the eastern sea. This is the east side. 47:19 On the south side it will run from Tamar to the waters of Meribath Kadesh, the river, 29  to the Great Sea. This is the south side. 47:20 On the west side the Great Sea will be the boundary to a point opposite Lebo-hamath. This is the west side.

47:21 “This is how you will divide this land for yourselves among the tribes of Israel. 47:22 You must allot it as an inheritance among yourselves and for the foreigners who reside among you, who have fathered sons among you. You must treat them as native-born among the people of Israel; they will be allotted an inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel. 30  47:23 In whatever tribe the foreigner resides, there you will give him his inheritance,” declares the sovereign Lord.

Ezekiel 48:23-29

48:23 “As for the rest of the tribes: From the east side to the west side, Benjamin will have one portion. 48:24 Next to the border of Benjamin, from the east side to the west side, Simeon will have one portion. 48:25 Next to the border of Simeon, from the east side to the west side, Issachar will have one portion. 48:26 Next to the border of Issachar, from the east side to the west side, Zebulun will have one portion. 48:27 Next to the border of Zebulun, from the east side to the west side, Gad will have one portion. 48:28 Next to the border of Gad, at the south side, the border will run from Tamar to the waters of Meribath Kadesh, to the Stream of Egypt 31  and on to the Great Sea. 48:29 This is the land which you will allot to the tribes of Israel, and these are their portions, declares the sovereign Lord.

[26:54]  1 tn Heb “to many you will multiply his inheritance.”

[32:5]  10 tn The verb is the Hiphil jussive from עָבַר (’avar, “to cross over”). The idea of “cause to cross” or “make us cross” might be too harsh, but “take across” with the rest of the nation is what they are trying to avoid.

[32:5]  11 tn The word “River” is not in the Hebrew text, but has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[32:6]  12 tn The vav (ו) is a vav disjunctive prefixed to the pronoun; it fits best here as a circumstantial clause, “while you stay here.”

[32:7]  13 tn Heb “heart.” So also in v. 9.

[32:9]  14 tn The preterite with vav (ו) consecutive is here subordinated to the parallel yet chronologically later verb in the next clause.

[32:9]  15 tn The infinitive construct here with lamed (ל) is functioning as a result clause.

[32:9]  16 tn The Lord had not given it yet, but was going to give it. Hence, the perfect should be classified as a perfect of resolve.

[32:11]  17 tn The clause is difficult; it means essentially that “they have not made full [their coming] after” the Lord.

[32:11]  18 tn The sentence begins with “if they see….” This is the normal way for Hebrew to express a negative oath – “they will by no means see….” The sentence is elliptical; it is saying something like “[May God do so to me] if they see,” meaning they won’t see. Of course here God is taking the oath, which is an anthropomorphic act. He does not need to take an oath, and certainly could not swear by anyone greater, but it communicates to people his resolve.

[32:11]  19 tc The LXX adds “those knowing bad and good.”

[32:11]  20 tn The words “to give” are not in the Hebrew text but have been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[32:13]  21 tn Heb “in the eyes of.”

[32:13]  22 tn The verb is difficult to translate, since it has the idea of “complete, finish” (תָּמָם, tamam). It could be translated “consumed” in this passage (so KJV, ASV); NASB “was destroyed.”

[47:13]  23 tc This translation follows the reading זֶה (zeh) instead of גֵּה (geh), a nonexistent word, as supported by the LXX.

[47:13]  24 tn Or “territory”; see D. I. Block, Ezekiel (NICOT), 2:715.

[47:13]  25 tc The grammar is awkward, though the presence of these words is supported by the versions. L. C. Allen (Ezekiel [WBC], 2:274) suggests that it is an explanatory gloss.

[48:28]  31 tn Traditionally “the Brook of Egypt,” although a number of recent translations have “the Wadi of Egypt” (cf. NAB, NIV, NRSV). The word “Egypt” is not in the Hebrew text, but is implied.
