The Summary of Families

3:17 These were the sons ¹  of Levi by their names: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Numbers 3:19

3:19 The sons of Kohath by their families were: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

3:29 The families of the Kohathites were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle.

Numbers 4:4

4:4 This is the service of the Kohathites in the tent of meeting, relating to the most holy things. ² 

[3:17]  ¹ tn The word “sons of” does at the outset refer to the sons of Levi. But as the listing continues the expression refers more to the family groups of the various descendants.

[4:4]  ² tn The Hebrew text simply has “the holy of holies,” or “the holy of the holy things” (קֹדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים, qodesh haqqodashim). The context indicates that this refers to all the sacred furnishings.
