[14:32]  1 tn The prepositional phrase must be “in his time of trouble” (i.e., when catastrophe comes). Cf. CEV “In times of trouble the wicked are destroyed.” A wicked person has nothing to fall back on in such times.

[14:32]  2 sn The righteous have hope in a just retribution – they have a place of safety even in death.

[14:32]  3 tc The LXX reads this as “in his integrity,” as if it were בְּתוּמּוֹ (bÿtumo) instead of “in his death” (בְּמוֹתוֹ, bÿmoto). The LXX is followed by some English versions (e.g., NAB “in his honesty,” NRSV “in their integrity,” and TEV “by their integrity”).

[3:11]  4 tn Heb “for the work of his hands will be done to him.”

[5:14]  5 tn Heb “Sheol” (so ASV, NASB, NRSV); the underworld, the land of the dead, according to the OT world view. Cf. NAB “the nether world”; TEV, CEV “the world of the dead”; NLT “the grave.”

[5:14]  6 tn Heb “so Sheol will make wide its throat, and open its mouth without limit.”

[5:14]  7 tn Heb “and her splendor and her masses will go down, and her tumult and the one who exults in her.” The antecedent of the four feminine singular pronominal suffixes used in v. 14b is unclear. The likely referent is personified Zion/Jerusalem (see 3:25-26; 4:4-5).

[25:41]  8 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

[25:44]  9 tn Grk “Then they will answer, saying.” The participle λέγοντες (legontes) is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

[25:45]  10 tn Grk “answer them, saying.” The participle λέγων (legwn) is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

[25:45]  11 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”

[2:8]  12 tn This contrast is clearer and stronger in Greek than can be easily expressed in English.

[2:8]  13 tn Grk “those who [are] from selfish ambition.”

[2:8]  14 tn Grk “are persuaded by, obey.”

[2:9]  15 tn No verb is expressed in this verse, but the verb “to be” is implied by the Greek construction. Literally “suffering and distress on everyone…”

[2:9]  16 tn Grk “every soul of man.”

[2:9]  17 sn Paul uses the term Greek here and in v. 10 to refer to non-Jews, i.e., Gentiles.

[2:2]  18 tn Or “based on truth.”

[1:7]  19 map For location see JP4 A1.

[1:7]  20 tn Although the first part of v. 7 is not a complete English sentence, it maintains the “From…to” pattern used in all the Pauline letters to indicate the sender and the recipients. Here, however, there are several intervening verses (vv. 2-6), which makes the first half of v. 7 appear as an isolated sentence fragment.

[1:7]  21 tn Grk “Grace to you and peace.”

[1:8]  22 tn Grk “First.” Paul never mentions a second point, so J. B. Phillips translated “I must begin by telling you….”

[1:9]  23 tn Grk “whom I serve in my spirit in the gospel.”

[1:9]  24 tn Grk “as.”

[20:15]  25 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[20:15]  26 tn The word “name” is not in the Greek text, but is implied.

[20:15]  27 tn Grk “he”; the pronoun has been intensified by translating as “that person.”

[21:8]  28 tn On the term φαρμακεία (farmakeia, “magic spells”) see L&N 53.100: “the use of magic, often involving drugs and the casting of spells upon people – ‘to practice magic, to cast spells upon, to engage in sorcery, magic, sorcery.’ φαρμακεία: ἐν τῇ φαρμακείᾳ σου ἐπλανήθησαν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ‘with your magic spells you deceived all the peoples (of the world)’ Re 18:23.”

[21:8]  29 tn Grk “idolaters.”

[21:8]  30 tn Grk “their share.”

[21:8]  31 tn Traditionally, “brimstone.”

[21:8]  32 tn Grk “sulfur, which is.” The relative pronoun has been translated as “that” to indicate its connection to the previous clause. The nearest logical antecedent is “the lake [that burns with fire and sulfur],” although “lake” (λίμνη, limnh) is feminine gender, while the pronoun “which” (, Jo) is neuter gender. This means that (1) the proper antecedent could be “their place” (Grk “their share,”) agreeing with the relative pronoun in number and gender, or (2) the neuter pronoun still has as its antecedent the feminine noun “lake,” since agreement in gender between pronoun and antecedent was not always maintained, with an explanatory phrase occurring with a neuter pronoun regardless of the case of the antecedent. In favor of the latter explanation is Rev 20:14, where the phrase “the lake of fire” is in apposition to the phrase “the second death.”
