[14:10]  1 tn Heb “bitterness of its soul.”

[14:10]  2 tn Heb “stranger” (so KJV, NASB, NRSV).

[14:10]  3 tn The verb is the Hitpael of II עָרַב (’arav), which means “to take in pledge; to give in pledge; to exchange.” Here it means “to share [in].” The proverb is saying that there are joys and sorrows that cannot be shared. No one can truly understand the deepest feelings of another.

[4:14]  4 tn Grk “will never be thirsty forever.” The possibility of a later thirst is emphatically denied.

[4:14]  5 tn Or “well.” “Fountain” is used as the translation for πηγή (phgh) here since the idea is that of an artesian well that flows freely, but the term “artesian well” is not common in contemporary English.

[4:14]  6 tn The verb ἁλλομένου (Jallomenou) is used of quick movement (like jumping) on the part of living beings. This is the only instance of its being applied to the action of water. However, in the LXX it is used to describe the “Spirit of God” as it falls on Samson and Saul. See Judg 14:6, 19; 15:14; 1 Kgdms 10:2, 10 LXX (= 1 Sam 10:6, 10 ET); and Isa 35:6 (note context).

[4:2]  7 sn This is a parenthetical note by the author.

[1:12]  8 tn BDAG 473 s.v. ἱκανόω states, “τινὰ εἴς τι someone for someth. Col 1:12.” The point of the text is that God has qualified the saints for a “share” or “portion” in the inheritance of the saints.

[1:12]  9 tn Grk “the inheritance of the saints.” The genitive noun τῶν ἁγίων (twn Jagiwn) is a possessive genitive: “the saints’ inheritance.”

[6:4]  10 tn Or “determine the genuineness of.”

[6:4]  11 tn Grk “he will have a reason for boasting.”

[6:4]  12 tn Or “and not in regard to.” The idea of comparison is implied in the context.

[6:8]  13 tn BDAG 915 s.v. σάρξ 2.c.α states: “In Paul’s thought esp., all parts of the body constitute a totality known as σ. or flesh, which is dominated by sin to such a degree that wherever flesh is, all forms of sin are likew. present, and no good thing can live in the σάρξGal 5:13, 24;…Opp. τὸ πνεῦμαGal 3:3; 5:16, 17ab; 6:8ab.”

[6:8]  14 tn Or “destruction.”

[6:8]  15 tn See the note on the previous occurrence of the word “flesh” in this verse.
