  Like the still quiet fall of the silent dew of night On the leaves, that are folded to rest, Is the mercy of God when it droppeth from His throne, Bringing balm from the fields of the blest. Refrain Dew of mercy, dew of mercy, Ever dropping, gently dropping from above; Dew of mercy, how it cheers us, Ever dropping from a Savior’s love! How it cheers and revives every bud of Christian hope! How it takes every sorrow away! O ’tis sweeter by far than the drops of nature’s dew, And it falleth by night and by day. Refrain When we ask of the Lord, in our simple fervent prayer, For His blessing at morn and at even, Let us pray that our souls may be watered and refreshed, By the dew of His mercy from Heaven.   Ye heav’ns, oh haste your dews to shed, Ye clouds, rain gladness on our head, Thou earth, behold the time of grace, And blossom forth in righteousness! O living Sun, with joy break forth, And pierce the gloomy clefts of earth; Behold, the mountains melt away Like wax beneath Thine ardent ray! O Life-dew of the Churches, come, And bid this arid desert bloom! The sorrows of Thy people see, And take our human flesh on Thee. Refresh the parched and drooping mind, The broken limb in mercy bind, Us sinners from our guilt release, And fill us with Thy heavenly peace. O wonder! night no more is night! Comes then at last the longed-for light? Ah yes, Thou shinest, O true Sun, In whom are God and man made one!

• [Pro 20:11] We Are But Little Children Weak

  We are but little children weak, Nor born in any high estate; What can we do for Jesus’ sake, Who is so high and good and great? We know the holy innocents Laid down for Him their infant life, And martyrs brave and patient saints Have stood for Him in fire and strife. We wear the cross they wore of old Our lips have learned like vows to make; We need not die; we cannot fight; What may we do for Jesus’ sake? O day by day each Christian child Has much to do, without, within; A death to die for Jesus’ sake, A weary war to wage with sin. When deep within our swelling hearts The thoughts of pride and anger rise, When bitter words are on our tongues, And tears of passion in our eyes; Then we may stay the angry blow, Then we may check the hasty word, Give gentle answers back again, And fight a battle for our Lord. With smiles of peace and looks of love, Light in our dwellings we may make, Bid kind good humor brighten there, And still do all for Jesus’ sake. There’s not a child so weak and small But has his little cross to take, His little work of love and praise, That he may do for Jesus’ sake.

  Weary souls, who wander wide From the central point of bliss, Turn to Jesus crucified, Fly to those dear wounds of His: Sink into the purple flood; Rise into the life of God. Find in Christ the way of peace, Peace unspeakable, unknown; By His pain He gives you ease, Life by His expiring groan: Rise, exalted by His fall, Find in Christ your all in all. O believe the record true, God to you His Son hath given; Ye may now be happy, too, Find on earth the life of Heaven: Live the life of Heaven above, All the life of glorious love. This the universal bliss, Bliss for every soul designed; God’s primeval promise this, God’s great gift to all mankind: Blest in Christ this moment be, Blest to all eternity!

  Almighty Lord, with one accord We offer Thee our youth, And pray that Thou would’st give us The warfare of the truth. Thy cause doth claim our souls by name, Because that we are strong; In all the land, one steadfast band, May we to Christ belong. Let fall on every college hall The luster of Thy cross, That love may dare Thy work to share And count all else as loss.
