Psalms 139:8

Context

139:8 If I were to ascend¹ to heaven, you would be there.

If I were to sprawl out in Sheol, there you would be.²

Isaiah 57:2

Context

57:2 Those who live uprightly enter a place of peace;

they rest on their beds.³

[139:8] ¹tn The Hebrew verb סָלַק (salaq, “to ascend”) occurs only here in the OT, but the word is well-attested in Aramaic literature from different time periods and displays a wide semantic range (see DNWSI 2:788-90).

[139:8] ²tn Heb “look, you.”

[57:2] ³tn Heb “he enters peace, they rest on their beds, the one who walks straight ahead of himself.” The tomb is here viewed in a fairly positive way as a place where the dead are at peace and sleep undisturbed.
