[49:15]  1 tn Or “certainly.”

[49:15]  2 tn Or “redeem.”

[49:15]  3 tn Or “me.” The Hebrew term נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh) with a pronominal suffix is often equivalent to a pronoun, especially in poetry (see BDB 660 s.v. נֶפֶשׁ 4.a).

[49:15]  4 tn Heb “hand.”

[49:15]  5 tn Or “for.”

[49:15]  6 tn Heb “he will take me.” To improve the poetic balance of the verse, some move the words “from the power of Sheol” to the following line. The verse would then read: “But God will rescue my life; / from the power of Sheol he will certainly deliver me” (cf. NEB).

[86:13]  7 tn Heb “for your loyal love [is] great over me.”

[86:13]  8 tn Or “for he will have delivered my life.” The verb form indicates a future perfect here.

[86:13]  9 tn Or “lower Sheol.”

[116:3]  10 tn Heb “surrounded me.”

[116:3]  11 tn The Hebrew noun מצר (“straits; distress”) occurs only here, Ps 118:5 and Lam 1:3. If retained, it refers to Sheol as a place where one is confined or severely restricted (cf. BDB 865 s.v. מֵצַר, “the straits of Sheol”; NIV “the anguish of the grave”; NRSV “the pangs of Sheol”). However, HALOT 624 s.v. מֵצַר suggests an emendation to מְצָדֵי (mÿtsadey, “snares of”), a rare noun attested in Job 19:6 and Eccl 7:26. This proposal, which is reflected in the translation, produces better parallelism with “ropes” in the preceding line.

[116:3]  12 tn The translation assumes the prefixed verbal form is a preterite. The psalmist recalls the crisis from which the Lord delivered him.

[16:23]  13 sn The Greek term Hades stands for the Hebrew concept of Sheol. It is what is called hell today. This is where the dead were gathered (Ps 16:10; 86:13). In the NT Hades has an additional negative force of awaiting judgment (Rev 20:13).

[16:23]  14 sn Hades is a place of torment, especially as one knows that he is separated from God.

[16:23]  15 tn Grk “he lifted up his eyes” (an idiom).

[16:23]  16 tn Grk “in his bosom,” the same phrase used in 16:22. This idiom refers to heaven and/or participation in the eschatological banquet. An appropriate modern equivalent is “at Abraham’s side.”

[16:1]  17 tn Grk “He”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[16:1]  18 tn These are not formal legal charges, but reports from friends, acquaintances, etc.; Grk “A certain man was rich who had a manager, and this one was reported to him as wasting his property.”

[16:1]  19 sn His manager was the steward in charge of managing the house. He could have been a slave trained for the role.

[16:1]  20 tn Or “squandering.” This verb is graphic; it means to scatter (L&N 57.151).

[1:1]  21 tn Grk “Paul.” The word “from” is not in the Greek text, but has been supplied to indicate the sender of the letter.

[1:18]  22 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[1:18]  23 tn Concerning “Hades” BDAG 19 s.v. ᾅδης 1 and 2 states: “Orig. proper noun, god of the nether world, ‘Hades’, then the nether world, Hades as place of the dead, Ac 2:27, 31 (Ps 15:10; Eccl 9:10; PGM 1, 179; 16, 8; Philo, Mos. 1, 195; Jos., Bell. 1, 596, Ant. 6, 332). [20:13]  24 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[20:13]  25 sn Here Death is personified (cf. 1 Cor 15:55).
